Fall and Winter 2017 Interior Design Color Trends

Fall is almost here, and we are already researching what home design and color hues will be huge for Fall and Winter 2017.

Missing color?  You are not alone!  For a few years now, the “go-to” colors were cool whites and grays for interiors.  This year finds us moving away from the all-white and gray scene.  Instead, people are embracing warm, rich shades of brown, green, mocha, tan, blue, and even blush!  Yes!  Pink is back…easy, soft pinks!  It seems we are craving those tones that replicate what we see in nature everyday.

In fact, the most popular shade of green right now is a dark green, sometimes called “Greenery.”  You can find it in kitchens, baths, and even on furniture in the coming months.

Matte black is another color that will be seen as well.  New matte black appliances, lighting fixtures, and even bathroom fixtures will make a debut.  Adding one matte black piece to any room makes a big statement and is a great way to refresh your space.

Copper fixtures and copper touches, although still in vogue, will be replaced with brass!  You will see lots of warm brass lighting and lamps, brass accents on tables, and even on sofas and upholstered pieces.

Gone are the days of generic, bland furniture sets.   We are now into the mixing and matching of furniture pieces that create a space that brings together serenity and comfort but that also functions to best suit your needs.  Velvet is huge this Fall and Winter!  Pairing velvet with woven textures and smooth metals will generate a smart and classic look for your home.  Picture a beautiful velvet chair and an antiqued brass lamp complimenting a room with woven baskets, a rough-sawn wood table, and soft, nubby textiles.  Wouldn’t you want to curl up there with a good book or relax after a day at the office?

Bedrooms are getting rid of big bulky beds and utilizing upholstered headboards to create a softer, cozier feel.  Duvets, all-white sheets, and boring bedding will be replaced with lots of soft quilts and comfortable blankets and those colors that wrap us in pleasant tranquility.

You will see more and more people extending the life of their outdoor spaces by adding portable heaters and/or fireplaces, soft, woven throws and pillows, and gentle outdoor lighting.  Outdoor furnishings will be imitating the trend that is happening indoors, as well.

Relaxation is our #1 goal for Fall and Winter.  We are craving our spaces to be soothing retreats these days, and many of our design trends are following this path as well.  You will discover that there are many new ways of creating a sanctuary in your home, whether it is a small nook in a larger space or an entire room dedicated to become your refuge, whether it is indoors or outdoors.

Home Remodeling Projects That Don’t Pay Off

Not every remodeling project will increase your home’s value. Some, in fact, can really turn off potential buyers. Value-reducers include:

Remodeling projects that are a bad investment

A built-in pool that takes up most of the yard.

In fact, an in-ground pool is a deterrent in many locations.  Some buyers are simply not interested in the upkeep of a pool if the location only allows pool use for 5-6 months or less.   A friend of mine recently sold her home with a lovely pool area for much, much less than she had anticipated.  She says she basically sold her home and gave the new owners the pool to go with it, free of charge!  She did not recoup her costs.  Certainly pool areas are awesome, just be sure your location supports good resale for pools before spending too much.


A super-large garage.

You may love the fact that you can house more than two cars and still have room for your motorcycles and/or other toys, or to work on those motors, bikes, cars, and woodworking items.  However, potential buyers may not share your enthusiasm for your motorized babies.  They may prefer additions to consist of more living space, rather than non-living space.


Strange room layouts, such as a bedroom that can only be accessed through another bedroom.

What can I say?  This is a deal breaker for so many buyers.  No explanations necessary.  While additional living space is always welcomed, bedrooms that can only be accessed through another bedroom are not ideal.  Bedrooms that have two or more ways to enter (read: two doors to the room) are another turn off to buyers.  Good furniture placement is hard to achieve in this type room.


A poorly designed addition that looks “tacked on.”

Using completely different building materials, a whole new decorating scheme, or something that feels disconnected to the rest of the house is a definite no-no.  Opt for additions that flow easily into the existing plan.  Consult a professional!


Remodeling projects with poor resale value

Too much white marble.

White marble is beautiful in its simplicity as accents to kitchens and baths, and even when used in furnishings and accessories…but this is the perfect example of “too much of a good thing!”


Any upgrade that prices a house significantly above those in the neighborhood.

We all want a beautiful and timeless $100,000 kitchen with all the bells and whistles!  What a joy to behold and to cook in and gather in with friends and family!!!  Sadly, a $100,000 kitchen in a neighborhood of $200-300,000 homes will not support good resale value.  Your home value is reflective of your neighborhood as well as its own condition and upgrades.  Fair or not, that is the way the housing market works.


The market value of your home is always dictated by prospective buyers.  When remodeling or upgrading, always consult a professional to estimate cost, get design ideas, and decide the best bang for your buck as far as resale.   This is the best way to keep from being surprised by a low rate of return when the time comes to relocate.  A small fee for a consultation is a small price to pay for peace of mind when spending money on your largest investment:  Your Home!



Delivery & Showroom Setup

We are now hiring part-time delivery & showroom set-up workers. This position involves delivering furniture and home accessories to our clients’ homes. This position will also involve checking in new merchandise and placing the furniture in the showroom.

Heavy lifting required. We require all of our staff to have good communication skills, be clean-cut, have a valid driver’s license, and be drug free.
